"This book has information that will refresh your memory and has a practice test to simulate the actual test. HOWEVER, I happen to have the 2017-2018 version and bought this book thinking it would have been updated....I was wrong. Not only is the 2017-2018 version and the 2019-2020 version the exact same book word for word, the 2019-2020 version has only ONE PRACTICE TEST compared to the 2017-2018 version which has TWO. Also the errors from the previous version weren’t fully corrected and there’s quite a few. All in all, the information here helps but I would highly suggest using another study guide as well. Seems like I’ll return this book and review the 2017-2018 version that I have."

  • I just took the AFOQT a week ago and used this book for studying. The book is well written and has a lot to use but I found that it did not prepare me as well as I would have hoped. The practice test had questions that seemed a lot easier than what the actual test expects from you. I would not just use this book to prepare. My suggestion is to use this in conjunction with other training methods online or other books.
  • I haven’t taken the test yet but this is the most detailed book I have bought so far
  • Excellent book, thanks
  • Ready for that test
  • I like how it outlines exactly what one needs to study to do well on the test. Everything is laid out manner-of-factly for all skill levels. I especially like the authors' invitation for constructive criticism. The first part of the book is a great refresher course on math, language arts and science in general, and then I like how they then delve into the mechanics of aircraft and physics to get potential applicants up to speed on specific Air Force information. The answer key to the practice test is well thought out and explains in detail why each answer is either correct or incorrect.
  • Impressive study guide! This book is so detailed, I could not believe it. The volume alone told me it contained everything I needed to know. The print inside was nice and dark. Easy to read. All topics were thoroughly outlined and provided in great depth.

I received this copy from the publisher. This is my voluntary review.
  • Free DVD offer on inside cover. That plus the online resources makes this an excellent study guide. The study guide provides information from verbal analogies to aviation information. With a practice test with over 100 questions. I found this guide useful. I recommend buying if you are planning to take the AFOQT.

“A must for CSNY fans.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

The first ever biography focused on the formative and highly influential early years of “rock’s first supergroup” (Rolling Stone) Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young—when they were the most successful, influential, and politically potent band in America—in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of Woodstock and the formation of the band itself.

1969 to 1974 were true golden years of rock n’ roll, bookmarking an era of arguably unparalleled musical power and innovation. But even more than any of their eminent peers, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young channeled and broadcast all the radical anger, romantic idealism, and generational angst of their time. Each of the members had already made their marks in huge bands (The Hollies, Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds), but together, their harmonies were transcendent.

The vast emotional range of their music, from delicate acoustic confessionals to raucous counter-culture anthems, was mirrored in the turbulence of their personal lives. Their trademark may have been vocal harmony, but few—if any—of their contemporaries could match the recklessness of their hedonistic and often combative lifestyles, when the four tenacious, volatile, and prodigal songwriters pursued chemical and sexual pleasure to life-threatening extremes.

Including full color photographs, CSNY chronicles these four iconic musicians and the movement they came to represent, concentrating on their prime as a collective unit and a cultural force the years between 1969, when Woodstock telegraphed their arrival to the world, and 1974, when their arch-enemy Richard Nixon was driven from office, and the band (to quote Graham Nash himself) “lost it on the highway.”

Even fifty years later, there are plenty of stories left to be told about Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young—and music historian Peter Doggett is here to bring them to light in the meticulously researched CSNY, a quintessential and illuminative account of rock’s first supergroup in their golden hour for die-hard fans, nostalgic flower-children, and music history aficionados alike.

PDF CSNY Crosby Stills Nash and Young Peter Doggett 9781501183027 Books

"A fascinating account of how the band came together and ultimately kept falling apart. It delves into the turbulent relationships among the musicians as well as their backgrounds. Throughout it seemed like a love-hate relationship mix. Their egos and eccentricities kept getting in their way. All band members were strong-willed and each wanted things their own way. Stephen Stills seemed to be the one who pulled the music together and mixed it to perfection. All of them are songwriters and each wanted their lyrics front and center and they had to work out a way for sharing the limelight. It was good that in many of the concerts they would play together then each musician would have a solo spot that showcased their voice. Crosby, Stills and Nash were the core of the group since they were together before Neil Young entered the picture. Neil was a recluse and, though he contributed much to the band and their unique sound, would disappear whenever he wanted - often at inappropriate times leaving the rest of the band to pick up the pieces. Young is a creative genius though and much was forgiven to keep him with the band and to have his voice and his lyrics.

One of the things that amazes me is how the musicians in this group and many other musicians at the time (and probably still today) float in and out of each others lives and can even step onstage in someone else's band and play like they belong there. It also amazes me how many of the musicians know each other. It seems CSNY hung out with and knew Mama Cass (who introduced the group members it seems), Eric Clapton, James Taylor, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, and the list goes on an on! Of course the CSNY band members had been part of The Byrds, ?The Hollies, and Buffalo Springfield before their group was ever formed. What talent!

The background of what influenced the lyrics was interesting. Many of the lyrics were written in anguish from various love affairs on the rocks. Some came from Crosby's sci-fi interest. Others were totally crafted into something that would appeal to the most people and sell the most. And still more came from the drug-infused atmosphere of the sixties. Then, of course, there are the political protest songs that were mainly against the Vietnam War.

I don't read much non-fiction, but since I love CSN's and CSNY's music I wanted to read this and I'm glad I did. The first of the book was a little rocky, but it smoothed out after awhile. It was only somewhat sequential in nature though - it kept going back and forth during a relatively short period of time (the band was only together officially for about two years). Reading this made me get out all my CSN and CSNY music and listen to it again and still love the feeling.

Thanks to Peter Doggett and Atria Books through Netgalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review."

CSNY Crosby Stills Nash and Young Peter Doggett 9781501183027 Books Reviews

  • The writing in this book is a cut above your run-of-the-mill rock 'n' roll books. The focus on the late '60s early '70s CSNY was most welcome. And, while Doggett is a fan, this isn't hagiography.
  • fun to read. Thank you!
  • Like so many music lovers, I was blown away by the breathtaking, soaring harmonies that flowed out of CSN's first album. What an incredible blend of voices not to mention Stills' musical virtuosity! I remember one reviewer saying the music was "too perfect" and wondered how it could be so. And then, like so many others, I was thrown for a loop when Neil Young was brought into the CSN mix. Whatever his contributions to Buffalo Springfield, Young's addition to CSN proved a mixed blessing as there were already enough giant egos at play. But, with the addition of Young, that first, joyous musical bubble was burst and CSN&Y was never the same. They were, however, off and running on a roller-coaster career that encompassed great songs, dud songs, endless feuds and fights, countless break-ups and get-togethers, mucho drugs, sparkling concerts and god-awful shows, Young bugging out whenever the mood struck, etc., etc. All of that is captured in Peter Doggett's incisive, entertaining book CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG. It's a great read on one of rock's legendary bands. Recommended.

  • What I look for in a biography is a very neutral viewpoint - mostly facts with leeway for some interpretation from a knowledgeable writer. But with CSNY, this felt very much a book written by a friend - someone who knew one or two of the band members and therefore, like a friend, not willing/wanting to hurt their feelings by giving a very honest depiction of events in the past. As well, those who were not deemed as helping the friend will get lambasted - so e.g., Crosby fares well here but Young and Nash do not. It's the nature of friendship but doesn't necessarily make a good book; the bias had to be compensated for by having inside information that a researcher just wouldn't be able to find. I don't know that this book really succeeded there - it is a VERY sympathetic look at especially Crosby and Stills but definitely not so for Nash and Young.

A reader will get this impression of the band after reading this book Crosby is a loveable little scamp with an incredible voice who adored women and became ensnared by drugs, Stills is a multi-instrumental genius who creates masterpieces, singls like an angel, and the leader of the band. Nash is wishy washy and a milquetoast who spent most of life bemused, and Young is the biggest jerk on the planet who is so selfish, he lives to ruin others lives and livelihoods. In reading the competing biography, Crosby comes off as a womanizer and damaged - needing drugs first to assuage and then to hide from life. Stills is demanding, difficult, and alcohol made it nearly impossible to work with him, Nash didn't like the drama and tried to tread the middle as much as possible to mitigate it, leading to bursts of anger and vicious words at bad times, and Young didn't want to deal with the drugs and personalities, had the complication of a disabled son requiring full time care, and shifting priorities that meant he was completely unpredictable and impossible for anyone to work with for any extended period of time.

Since this is focused on that two year period when CSNY got big, you'll find a lot more in here about their lifestyles and the people moving around them like satellites. The author gives many different accounts of the same situation (drugs/alcohol meant that most remember the time differently) but then he also gives a lot of opinions throughout, either making conclusions on what really happened or flat out guessing why someone did/said something they did. Some readers will appreciate the opinions/speculation but others may prefer a biographer to just stick either the facts or the statements, without trying to interpret them.

What the book did well is to really make Stills and Crosby personable and like your best buddy - you feel like you were one of their friends during this time period in their life. Life in Mulholland and Laurel Canyon in the 1970s/1960s is richly realized - and it was fascinating to read about all the people who floated in and out of the scene when the band got together (be it at Mama Cass' house or at one of the band's homes). And events of the time, such as the death of Crosby's girlfriend in an accident, are richly detailed rather than a passing comment. As such, it does feel like you are looking from the inside out or talking with someone who was touring with the band and knew them well. But I think it is important to be aware of the limitations of seeing things from the inside - it's hard to really gain a clear perspective on the subject. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Animal Farm Audible Audio Edition George Orwell Ralph Cosham Inc Blackstone Audio Books Reviews

  • Great book, but my copy is almost unreadable. Anywhere in the book where the letters "iv" are together, i.e. live, given, etc. the word is broken up with "Chapter IV" in the middle. As in gChapter IVen. Or how about prChapter IVately. Very disappointed that this would be put out. Add paragraph breaks mid-sentence and you now have a literary nightmare.

Just noticed this date on the last page. This the date I ordered it. No publisher. Almost seems bootleg-ish....

    I want my money back.
  • My review is not of the book Animal Farm but of this edition. In case you are looking for a review of the book itself, I highly recommend it. It is a wonderful book and strangely relevant today.

I bought this paperback edition from a few days ago. When it arrived, it looked like someone had printed it on a desktop printer and stapled it together. That on its own wouldn't be a major issue.

The deal killer and the reason for the one star review is that someone appears to have run a find and replace on the letter pair "IV" replacing it with the words "Chapter IV". So, for instance, the word "perspective" reads "perspectChapter IVe" and the word "receive" reads "receChapter IVe". The entire book has been affected by this. Glancing through the book, I realized how often the letter pair IV appears in English. Nearly every page in the book has at least one word affected by this.

When I first received a copy, I assumed it was that specific copy and ordered another one with a different cover. I didn't check the manufacturer. Turns out it is the same book with a different cover and the issue was in it again.

If you are looking to buy an edition of the book, buy some other manufacturer's copy unless you'd like to decipher words with random "Chapter IV" in the middle just for fun.
  • I am reviewing 's "paperback" edition - not the novel itself (which is wonderful.) This edition was literally printed to fill my order - the date printed on the final page is 3 days before I received it in the mail. The type is tiny, there are weird blank lines throughout, and the words "Chapter IV" just appear randomly many, many times. It's unreadable. What on earth is playing at by selling this garbage product?

I now know that reviews of a "book" on are not necessarily reviews of the product you are buying. I assumed this edition would be fine since it had over 4 stars. But I now see the average stars include all kinds of editions including .
  • The book itself is great - no issues with the book. This kindle version, however, is a travesty. There is not a single paragraph without a glaring typo. It's as if they just scanned the pages of a print version, let the OCR run wild, and did zero proofreading afterwards. Examples include "expect" instead of "except," "to" instead of "too," missing words, punctuation in the wrong place, etc.

It's so distracting, that I had stop reading at the beginning of chapter 7, and get a different version. Do yourself a favor and skip this version.
  • In the 21st century, when we believe that everything is evolving around us and that all countries are moving forward, we realize that there is still a parasite which it is difficult to get rid of.
Countries that had the opportunity to evolve, have had to pass a difficult test of not falling into totalitarianism and ambition. Such was the case of some countries of the Soviet Union that achieved liberation, but still others continue to fall into the same abyss from which they can't rise, or don't want to, since that parasite has crawled in the mind of their crowd, as did happen in North Korea, China, etc.
Animal Farm shows the perfect example of how the unhealthy idea of a cheap Socialism began to take root to become a dictatorial Communism, as it happens in Venezuela today. Its strange end leaves a bitter taste that perhaps the writer did on purpose to open the consciousness of future generations. An open ending that forces the reader to ask himself what is the solution? And how will it end?
Through human experiences of the animals of this farm, we can identify this truth that still lingers in some shady societies of the present. The solution is in our hands. It will depend on the degree of preparation, culture, moral values, determination, and courage people have to free their homeland and achieve a better future. Remember governments must fear the people and not the opposite.
After that, I summarize my point of view about the strongest references dealt with through the characters in this book (that can be easily identify and distinguished when you start to read the story) in the following sections
    1) Leaders full of charisma who manage to enter the hearts of the crowd by their power of conviction. They choose the most insecure sectors and people to whom they inject large doses of false trust and dependence, and then use them in the propagation of their miserable revolution.
    2) From the beginning, they call a supposed self-identification and self-recognition through rhythmic and flattering slogans. They remember again and again their few and poor achievements that remain in the distant past. Then, they impose a barrier of differences between them and the supposed enemy. In this way, the people is infused with a nationalism that is based on ignorance, fear, and blind reverence, forcing them to repeat proverbs and apply reforms without understanding the true meaning or purpose, thus beginning to resemble a herd of sheep, marching pleased towards the slaughterhouse.
    3) They make the crowd believe that they have the final decision and, for the common good, unconsciously follow the rules and imposed parameters. In addition, some extra benefits are allowed to those who follow and protect the regime indulgently. This is how they teach the majority that it is better to be corrupt, dishonest, and negligent, in order to achieve higher ranks.
    4) The regime feel entitled to legalize and abolish what suits it, ordering the people what to eat, how to dress, greet and live, and what to learn, while they live freely at the expense of the efforts of others and of the injustices committed, trampling the honor of an entire country and their own Machiavellian socialist laws.
    5) What seemed a worthy plan for community, social, intellectual, and economic development, now shows the true intention that tries to kill the spirit of solidarity to impose the dictatorial and even genocidal plan, if the regressive revolution warrants it.
    6) Everyone, even the majority of the crowd, realize that revolutionary projects are a total failure when they find themselves amidst of aberrant poverty.
    7) When they want to discredit an opponent or other progressive ideas, they use their famous method of defamation with lies, intimidation, and any other means. For them, the aim (maintain / save the revolution) justifies the means (spreading false rumors, prosecutions, torture, hunger, espionage), importing in the least the opinion of others, since their own people live in ignorance, cowardice and/or conformism.
    8) To finally protect their interests and ideals, communists surround themselves with and associate with allies of their own class corrupt, traffickers, murderers and terrorists, and expand their power further through the destruction of every vital block of a society , from its financial structure to public sectors, such as health, without caring about the misery that people live. To rule the ignorant and negligent is much easier.
    9) There comes a time when the revolutionary-communist doctrine is so deeply rooted in the consciences, that the people forget how well they lived before. The most outrageous thing is that there are still people who support such regimes and whose can mental programming is so easily influenced on behalf the sadistic needs and convenience of these cunning and malevolent rulers.
Times before the Rebellion are being left in the past, where the memories struggle to keep them safe to share them with others
  • Do not order the paperback version pictured here. The font is so small it is unreadable, but that is the least of the troubles of this book. There is no copyright information or title page, there are paragraph breaks in the middle of sentences and every single time the letters "iv" appear in a word it is replaced with "Chapter IV". I have added a few photos so you can avoid the same issue I had.

Insane Mode How Elon Musk Tesla Sparked an Electric Revolution to End the Age of Oil Hamish McKenzie Books Reviews

  • Insane Mode is an engaging, insightful read, and an essential look not just at Tesla as one of the world’s great companies but the hinge point in which our society finds itself. While on the surface an insider’s view of the company itself, the book expands its focus outward to explore the intersection of innovation, entrepreneurship, capitalism, the history of our addiction to carbon fuels and what the future may hold. McKenzie’s writing is personal, informative, and accessible making the book addictive to read.
  • It felt like a mashup of web news articles. There's no beginning, middle, or end to the book -- no narrative arc, at least none I could figure out. Random picayune details pop up constantly -- specific times and dates that Elon walks on stage to give a speech, for example. How is that useful other than to boost the word count? There's no chronological order to anything, stuff happens then other stuff happens then stuff happened before all of that then stuff happens in-between and oh, reader, are you still following along? Sigh. And each chapter is a microcosm of the problems of the whole book chapters don't really have their own storyline, just more mashed up material.

I really wanted to like this book but found it was not helping me understand the EV situation. Too much talk of "revolution" like this was originally an 18-minute TED talk burdened down with a lot of filler. Sorry Hamish, it needs work.
  • I was already familiar with the author via his writings for PandoDaily, a Silicon Valley tech news site. I always especially enjoyed his long form articles, so I was delighted to find out he wrote an entire book!

I found his articles to be well written, meticulously researched, and thought-provoking, and this book did not disappoint. It was all the usual goodness for several hundred pages.

The book is a comprehensive look at the electric car landscape, so it would be a compelling and satisfying read for anyone generally curious in the technology because of the depth and detail in which he goes. This was my primary interest for reading it.

I also think the book would be an interesting read from a business/entrepreneurship perspective. As the book's title suggests, Insane Mode could also be used to describe the ferociousness of Elon Musk and Tesla overcoming obstacles.

    Overall, definitely worth a read.

    Cheers
  • Hamish has a unique voice that shines through in his entertaining writing style. This book is not only an incredible account of one of the most influential entrepreneurs of our time, but is a deep dive in to the evolution of electric vehicles and where this is all heading. Very exciting read!
  • Insane Mode takes a deep dive look at the evolution of Tesla and the inevitable future of the auto industry. We get a lot of details and context on how Elon Musk managed to overcome an onslaughter of obstacles, some of which are truly daunting. McKenzie also sheds light on rapid developments in China and the entrepreneur spirit there that’s driving risk takers to try to build ever fancier electric/autonomous vehicles. A fascinating read for anyone interested in the next big revolution where electric energy, transportation and AI merge and change our world forever.
  • Great book on the electric car revolution. While this book is focused more on Tesla, the reader still receives a good overview of the current state in electric cars and what we will See in the near future.
  • This is an excellent primer in how Elon Musk has primed the electric car revolution. The book also reviews the early days a century ago when electric, steam and internal combustion engines were competing to become the standard. Thomas Edison and Henry Ford even had a deal to produce electric cars, but batteries of the standard needed could not be produced. Also, when internal combustion won out, it took years before service stations were available nationwide. Much of interest is in this book. It would have been interesting to learn more about why Musk finds it necessary to build muscle cars, in that hi energy users are still wasteful, even if not directly burning petroleum. Also, more needs to be said about where all the electric power will come from. But overall, this book by Kiwi Hamish MacKenzie is a must read for those interested in the huge competition and transport revolution that is coming.
  • Meh. I really like Elon Musk and his mission, but the first third of book seems as if it were written by a huge Musk fanboy or a cousin. The last 2/3rds is just a smattering of names and random stories. I actually double checked to make sure I didnt buy an author self published book. It's ok, but wouldn't recommend it someone else.

"Reapers... Need More... Reapers

I'll try to go into more of an explanation if my shortened review above wasn't enough.

Let's get right to it then... Who is Rhi's Dragon King? Oh, shoot... I didn't mean to write that. But seriously, who is it?! No conspiracy theories - just cold - hard - truth bombs. Who. Is. It? It should be illegal for an author to torture her fans (vis-à-vis - a literary inflicter of pain). Rhi's DK has got to be confirmed. The Lost television series answered more questions than D. Grant! **Oh No** I'm still writing about Rhi - Fine - on to Dark Alpha's Awakening!

First, Reaper's Rock (Donna Grant, t-shirt business with me 💙🤞💙).

This seventh installment in the Reapers series is diabolically dark and scrumptiously satisfying (think rock climbing, rope in one hand, gooey butter cake with caramel frosting in the other) that is Dark Alpha's Awakening. I have been looking forward to Erith and Cael's story. Death and her Reapers are a fascinating additional series in the Dark World. I feel as though I write this a lot lately (perhaps because there are so many incredible authors living, breathing, and writing their butts off presently) but it can't be stressed enough - when an author creates a World and does it in such a way that each branch, leaf, and stem, each character, protagonists and antagonists, each friendship and romance, every 360° black, white and grey view imprints on a reader's mind - we truly think about the creation, swirl what-if ideas around in our minds... this is what Grant has built. This story has been writing itself for thousands of years (in Dark World time) and it was worth the wait!

*End Note - Confession: I kind of want Rhi to give Balladyn another chance - Come On! - Rhi's his one and only. He really seems so cute and cuddly... a poet at heart really...

  • The story we have waited for!!! Dark Alpha's Awakening was full of ups and downs, twists and turns. We finally learned of Death's past and how she became who she is and why. While it did answer questions about what she is and if she has any relation to Rhi, I think this storyline turned a corner so to speak.
Cael has been in love with Erith since the moment he first saw her all those years ago. He agreed to be a reaper so he could see her every day and while it has been a true test of his patience he has no regrets. Cael would do anything for her or for his reapers.
Erith has been alive longer than she cares to admit, always staying desperate from everyone. She felt that was her penance for all of the lives she has taken. Cael has held a special place in her heart since she saw him on the battle field. He has been the only one to give her such deep yearning to have more to be more.
The battle with Bran comes to a head in this book, will love win the day?
  • Cael and Erith's story is heart wrenching and beautiful. A Love that was hidden on both sides for a millennium. Because of Bran siphoning Erith's power, these two finally found the courage to show the other how they felt. But with a battle soon to take place, are they doomed to be parted so soon after coming together?
There is quite a bit revealed in this book. Sides are chosen. Xaneth, Balladyn, Usaeil also make poignant appearances in this book. You absolutely do not want to skip this pivotal book. I urge you to read this book but make sure you have a few tissues handy.
  • Dark Alpha's Awakening is the long awaited Cael and Erith story. Donna Grant always spins a wonderful tale. In each of the previous Reaper books, the chemistry between Cael and Erith has been evident. I loved this story. Cael is so strong and his refusal to let Erith give up is heartwarming. This book evoked tears - sad and happy. The Reapers work with Erith to finally confront Bran. Not going to spoil that outcome, but looking forward to the remaining Reaper stories & how strong the teams will now be with Death back and better than ever with Cael at her side. The end of this book had me clapping and excited for the next reaper book. The royal battle with the Kings and Queen of the Light is looming -- I can't wait for all the characters Ms. Grant has created In this world fight against the crazy queen.
  • I am so glad to finally be reading one of the romances we have all been waiting for. It may not be Rhi and her King, but Erith and Cael are a very lose second. That longing they have had for centuries has been hard to ignore, but discipline kept it at bay. Until Death started to weaken and Cael could not take losing her without at least telling her how he feels. Things never go exactly as planned, especially while fighting Bran and keeping the Reapers women safe from his vengeance. I really enjoyed their story. It had it all. A thrilling, unpredictable battle to the death that takes us all over and has us meeting a few familiar faces. Definitely can't wait to read the next one! Definitely not to be missed !
  • Of course, 5 stars, although I wish it could be 10!!! Another EXCELLENT addition to this fabulous series!!! One of my top 3 favorite series of all time. We waited a long time for Erith and Cael's story, and man, Donna Grant did not disappoint!! I so feared it would be the final book in the series, but now there is a whole new 7 Reapers, and Xaneth as well!!! Yay!! That made me so happy!! Looking so forward to Xaneth's story, which I'm assuming is next.
  • What a wonderful turn of events for Eirith and Cael! I just love this entire story with all of the Reapers their new world and the defeat of Bran. I am really wondering how Eirith was born and how she spent so many eons in the blackness of space. Perhaps with Cael’s newfound power they can discover the truth of that one. And I just love the world that is now the Reapers home! Always a fan!
  • I have been waiting for Cael's and Erith's (Death) story since the beginning of this series. I have no doubt everyone who has been reading this series has felt the same way. And, I have been awaiting the villain's (oh, and he was SO evil) comeuppance as well. Oh my! Ms. Grant nailed it! I was a wreck. And, it was oh so worth the wait! Fantastic!

Sapiens Audible Audio Edition Yuval Noah Harari Derek Perkins Random House Audiobooks Books Reviews

  • Harari primarily presents an hypothesis as to how Homo sapiens who successfully migrated out of Africa circa 70 kya (thousand years ago) and thereafter, successfully dominating the planet, differed from earlier Homo sapiens who attempted out migration previously (e.g. around 130 kya) but were not successful. Keep in mind that Homo neanderthals in Europe and Homo erectus in Asia had climate and environment adaptations that sapiens did not have and were separate species. Harari claims (assumes) that the later sapiens differed from the earlier sapiens in only one way. They had evolved the ability to form an "inter-subjective reality," as opposed to objective reality (physical) or subjective reality (in only one person's mind). They were able to tell stories and believe them, independent of physical reality.

Everything from myth to religion to nations to moral codes to money are inter-subjective realities according to Harari. They have force in the physical world as long as people believe them, and cease to exist the moment people no longer believe them. This explains how people could cooperate in groups larger than 150, giving them a military and security advantage, and encouraging specialization which eventually gave them a technological advantage.

Moreover, Harari claims (assumes) all these later sapiens were genetically identical, and that the variations in societies are purely cultural, i.e. inter-subjective realities. He presents history as an erratic evolution toward global unity, which is essentially demanded by the nature of inter-subjective realities, requiring belief of all those in mutual frequent contact, but he doesn't say how.

In fact, Harari presents only anecdotal evidence for his claim. He presents no empirical studies regarding the flexibility of humans toward inter-subjective realities, and no mathematical models of its development, evolutionary advantage, or stability. He describes the scientific method as an important development, and requires it to include both mathematical models and verification of them. But he does not use either in his treatise. Thus he presents an important and interesting hypothesis, but not in a scientific manner. He makes not even suggestions as to how to further formulate or verify it as a scientific theory. Perhaps he is trapped in the inter-subjective reality of history as liberal arts, not science.

The term "intersubjective" does exist in the literature of psychology and philosophy, primarily as a synonym for "agreement," but there is no agreement about its definition (Gillespie and Cornish 2009, Journal for Theory of Social Behavior) state

"The concept of intersubjectivity is used widely, but with varying meanings. Broadly speaking, we take intersubjectivity to refer to the variety of possible relations between people’s perspectives. If we take social life to be founded on interactions then intersubjectivity should be a core concept for the social sciences in general and understanding social behaviour in particular. Perhaps because of this broad relevancy research has been fragmented and at least six definitions are in circulation. Most simplistically, intersubjectivity has been used
to refer to agreement in the sense of having a shared definition of an object."

The biggest complaint I have about Harari is that he does not distinguish between his opinion and facts, nor explain the background of how he arrived at the theory of inter-subjectivity. The study of the evolution of cooperation is a hot topic, with political scientists, biologists, mathematicians and even physicists all having theories, and much data collected and many math models developed. It is apparent Harari is aware of this, but does not tell us how his theory fits in. I can only conclude he finds his powers of popular persuasion greater than his powers of scientific persuasion and critical analysis, so he writes a long book instead of a focused research paper.

By the way, you can find excellent video summaries and reviews of this book on the web, and even a "summary" for sale as an eBook. I originally got interested from the video summary.

Near the end Harari reports on happiness research. In this section of the book he takes exception to his usual approach, giving us descriptions of studies and names of researchers so we can trace where these conclusions come from. The book is worth reading for this section.

Occasionally Harari gets facts wrong. You won't realize this unless you have investigated the matter separately. I noticed it because his description of the origin of the caste system in India was wrong, according to current research.

Harari tries to present himself as outside modern factions (or inter-subjective realities), such as nature vs. nurture, liberalism vs. conservatism, etc. But without conscious explication, he suffuses his book with the assumption that any modern human if taken from birth is equally at home in any of the current or historical inter-subjective realities. He does not propose or even consider experiments to determine culture-vs-genetics. So he proposes this important genetic ability evolved in a small population on a single continent between 130kya and 70kya, but that no differentiating evolution has occurred since then.

The question of whether the degree or style of inter-subjectivity is as universal as he implies is important for several reasons. Harari proposes the world is "different" since 1945, with no war between major powers, no more empires expanding by territorial acquisition. He suggests some reasons for this (cost of nuclear war, for example) which are unverified. His book was completed in 2014 before Russia claimed parts of Ukraine and China claimed the entire South China Sea. If inter-subjective capacity is universal, then this situation is likely unstable. People could quit believing it at any moment, and the world could return to any state that it has been in historically. If inter-subjective capacity is not identical in everyone, then it might make a great deal of difference which cultures dominate, even if through historical accident. See for example Boyd and Richerson 2009 Culture and the Evolution of Human Cooperation.

So, it is a book full of powerful ideas, often with carefully balanced arguments on both sides, but beware of accepting the background assumptions without critical thinking, or you will just fall into the latest meme.
  • I bought the book based on high rating but was disappointed. The beginning part was ok but later I felt more and more not reading actual (scientific) facts but only the author's own opinions REPEATEDLY which were presented in a bad way. I tried to continue to finish the book but it was not an easy task. Anyway, not a good book for me,
  • If you want to learn about the author's feelings and musings about modern society cloaked in the history of our species, this book is for you. If, however, you, as I did, want to learn something scientific about the progress of our species unspoiled by a political screed, search for something else. Rarely have I felt that I misspent money on a book. In this case, I did. Too bad because it might have been an interesting read. I could go on, but it's not worth more of my time.
  • Didn't finish - what starts as interesting history turns quickly into a biased, hateful rant against humanity. Obviously there is room for critique in that regard but that's not why I bought it or what it is promoted as.
  • Never before have I reviewed a book after 2300 others have done the same. Who's going to read 2300 reviews and who will read this? Surely a waste of time for a lot of people including me. Now that I am past that let me state that Harari gives a heckeva good read. This is not the usual rise and fall of empires and kingdoms but a broad ranging overview of how we got here. Parts of it were downright fascinating such as "imagination" being a keystone to human activity, e.g. corporations, money, and religion.

Something I found really different and pleasing was his discussion of things where he had no real answer. In the case of all cultures being patriarchal he gives three or four possible reasons. That's good enough for me as there is still no real answer. I find that fair and enlightening. He also does something different as he uses the pronoun "she" throughout the book instead of the previously required male pronoun. Finally he keeps touching on the fact that animals have paid a terrible price for the rise of sapiens. From hunter-gatherer days to the factory farms of today they have suffered. He's right. Incidentally our family has a farm background and I eat no chicken, turkey, pork, or beef. Ever been in a confinement barn?

Now I didn't give the book five stars because he makes positive references to the misguided but widely read Jared Diamond. He borrows a fair amount from Diamond, for example, in that hunter-gatherers were happier than folks today. Let me emphasize that on this snowy March day the cat and I are both glad we don't need to go out and scavenge something off the frozen earth.

Finally, beware of the paper back edition. It has incredibly cheap paper and tiny print. If you purchase the book look for a hard cover. I now consign this review to oblivion. . .still I liked the book.
